That Bag Is Giving… Fake. Here's How to Tell.

Because a pre-loved icon should come with one thing above everything else: the confidence that it's the real deal.

Let's be honest. We've all seen it, the slightly-off Louis Vuitton at the coffee shop, the Gucci that's just a little too shiny, the Chanel that wouldn't fool a ten-year-old. Spotting a fake is a skill, and once you have it, you can never unsee it. The good news? It's not as hard as the counterfeit market wants you to think.

1. The Stitching Never Lies

Luxury houses are obsessive about their stitching, and we mean obsessive. Every stitch is even, tight, and consistent from one end of the bag to the other. On a real Louis Vuitton, the thread count per inch is the same on the handle as it is on the base. On a fake? You'll usually find loose threads, uneven spacing, or stitching that changes colour slightly where it shouldn't. Run your fingers along the seams. If it feels rushed, it probably was.

2. The Logo Is a Giveaway Every Single Time

Counterfeiters put most of their effort into the logo because they think that's what people check first. They're right, but they almost always get it wrong. On authentic Louis Vuitton, the LV monogram never gets cut off at a seam. It's intentional, it's centred, and it's deliberate. On Gucci's double-G hardware, both G's should be perfectly symmetrical and sit flush against each other. If one G looks like it's trying to escape, put the bag down and walk away.

3. The Weight Will Tell You the Truth

Real designer bags are heavy. Not uncomfortable-heavy, but substantial-heavy. That's because the leather is full-grain, the hardware is solid metal, and the lining is quality fabric, not plastic. When you pick up an authentic Chanel flap for the first time, it has a presence to it. A counterfeit version almost always feels hollow and light, like someone made a bag-shaped object rather than an actual bag.

4. Check the Hardware Up Close

Zips, clasps, turn-locks, and chain straps are where fakes fall apart fastest. On a genuine bag, zippers glide. They don't catch, stick, or feel gritty. The engravings on hardware, think the Chanel CC clasp or the YSL logo plate, are deep, clean, and sharp. On a fake, engravings tend to be shallow and slightly blurry, like a stamp that ran out of ink halfway through. Also check the back of any hardware. Authentic pieces are finished on both sides. Fakes usually aren't.

5. The Smell Is Real

This one surprises people. Genuine leather has a distinct, warm, earthy smell that you don't forget once you know it. Fake bags, especially those made from PU leather or low-grade materials, smell chemical, plasticky, or just oddly synthetic. It's not a glamorous test, but give the bag a discreet sniff. Your nose knows.

6. The Price Is the Oldest Red Flag in the Book

A real Gucci Marmont doesn't go for £80. A genuine Louis Vuitton Speedy isn't sitting in a marketplace listing for £120 with free next-day delivery. If the price makes you feel like you've won the lottery, you haven't, you've just found a very confident faker. Pre-loved luxury does come at a discount, but there's a floor. If it sounds too good to be true, it absolutely is.

So Where Do You Actually Buy Safely?

Here's our shameless but completely honest answer: you buy from people who know what they're doing. Every bag in our store goes through a thorough authentication check before it ever makes it onto the site. We look at the stitching, the hardware, the date codes, the lining, the smell, yes, actually the smell, before anything gets listed. You're not taking a gamble. You're making a smart purchase from people who genuinely care about getting it right.
